TYPES OF BACK INJURY CASES
The type of back injury cases Hugh Howerton handles include the following:
Herniated lumbar disc

What is a herniated disc?
A disc is a soft cushion that sits between each vertabrae of the spine. Inside the disc there is a material that has the consistency of a jelly filled donut. Trauma from a vehicle crash, fall or lifting heavy objects can cause the disc to rupture or herniate. When the disc herniates it can push part of the disc or the inside filling out of its normal boundry and press up against one of the spinal nerves that are very close to it. This is called a "pinched nerve"
Symptoms can include electric shock pain, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness, pain running down into the arms and legs, trouble walking and bladder & bowel problems
If you are experiencing bladder or bowel problems this may be the sign
of cauda equina syndrome. This is a medical emergency, and your should see your doctor immediately if you have problems urinating, having bowel movements, or if you have numbness around your genitals.
A herniated disc is diagnosed by a physical exam which checks your reflexes and muscle stength or through special testing like an EMG, CT scan, myleogram or MRI
Sometimes surgery is needed to repair the injured disc.
Lumbar Fusion

What is a lumbar fusion?
People who have herniated discs in their back or neck sometimes have continued pain, numbness and weakness even after the herniated disc is repaired by surgery. When this happens the surgeon may have to fuse the vertebrae together in the spine to stop or prevent abnormal movement in the spine that is creating these conditions The lumbar fusion can be done in the front or the back of the spine.
If the fusion is performed in the front of your spine, the surgeon will remove the disc and place a bone graft between the vertebrae where it eventually fuses to the surrounding vertebrae to stop the abnormal movement of the spine. If the fusion is performed in the back of your spine, a bone graft will be placed on the sides of the vertebrae where it will grow together to the vertebrae to stop abnormal motion.
Sometimes metal rods, screws or hooks are also used with the bone graft to further stabilize the spine. This is called "instrumentation."
The most common reason for surgery is leg pain or sciatica. The patient no longer has back pain but they continue to have pain that goes into the leg and foot.
