WHAT IS A HERNAITED DISC?
A disc is a soft cushion that sits between each vertabrae of the spine. Inside the disc there is a material that has the consistency of a jelly filled donut. Trauma from a vehicle crash, fall or lifting heavy objects can cause the disc to rupture or herniate. When the disc herniates it can push part of the disc or the inside filling out of its normal boundry and press up against one of the spinal nerves that are very close to it. This is called a "pinched nerve" or herniated disc.
SYMPTOMS OF A HERNIATED DISC
Symptoms can include electric shock pain, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness, pain running down into the arms and legs, trouble walking and bladder & bowel problems
If you are experiencing bladder or bowel problems this may be the sign of cauda equina syndrome. This is a medical emergency, and your should see your doctor immediately if you have problems urinating, having bowel movements, or if you have numbness around your genitals.
A herniated disc is diagnosed by a physical exam which checks your reflexes and muscle stength or through special testing like an EMG, CT scan, myleogram or MRI
Sometimes surgery is needed to repair the injured disc.
