Type of Neck Injury Cases

HERNIATED OR RUPTURED CERVICAL DISC
A disc is a soft cushion that sits between each vertabrae of the spine. Inside the disc there is a material that has the consistency of a jelly filled donut. Trauma from a vehicle crash, fall or lifting heavy objects can cause the disc to rupture or herniate. When the disc herniates it can push part of the disc or the inside filling out of its normal boundry and press up against one of the spinal nerves that are very close to it. This is called a "pinched nerve"
Symptoms can include electric shock pain, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness, pain running down into the arms and legs, trouble walking and bladder & bowel problems
If you are experiencing bladder or bowel problems this may be the sign of cauda equina syndrome. This is a medical emergency, and your should see your doctor immediately if you have problems urinating, having bowel movements, or if you have numbness around your genitals.
A herniated disc is diagnosed by a physical exam which checks your reflexes and muscle stength or through special testing like an EMG, CT scan, myleogram or MRI
CERVICAL FUSION
Cervical fusions are performed to eliminate unwanted movement in the vertebral column of the neck. This excessive movement causes on-going pain. It is performed by either a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon.
The operation is done to relieve the pressure on the nerve roots, by fising together the vertebrae of the neck. Hopefully, if the excessive motion is stopped so does the pain.
Sometimes the surgeon will use metal plates or pins to provide extra support to the neck to make sure that the bones fuse adequately. This is called "instrumentation"
