One of the best ways to protect yourself and your family is to have the right auto insurance. After you read this call your insurance agent and ask if you have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. In the insurance business it's called UM/UIM. It works this way. Say you're in a wreck caused by the fault of another driver. If you are hurt and your car is wrecked usually the other person's liability insurance will pay for your injuries and have your car fixed or replaced. But what happens if the other person did not have insurance. Unfortunately it happens too often.
If you have UM/UIM insurance then you can make a claim for your own personal injuries and your own insurance company will have to pay all the damages caused by the other driver. Things like medical bills and lost wages. You are also entitled to compensation for physical pain, mental anguish, physical impairment and physical disfigurement. Try to get at least $100,000 in UM/UIM coverage. Check with your agent to see how much extra it would cost to bump up the coverage to $300,000. It doesn't cost 3x as much. You would be surprised. Also look into buying an umbrella coverage. That may add another $1,000,000 in protection should you or a family member be seriously hurt in the car wreck. The cost of the umbrella policy is usually lest than $20 per month.
